I came to your site looking for information on building a hedgehog house. We have an allotment, and want to encourage hogs to come and eat all our slugs. Your notes were very helpful, and I plan to build something next week as I have some pre-Christmas down-time.

I found the dog nosing at a healthy hedgehog on my garden path tonight ,he seemed uninjured , healthy and aware but due to close proximity of the busy edinburgh road I moved him to the nearest forest edge . It was only after this that I came across your site which has some excellent advice .

Really good and clear site. I have got a mum hedgehog and 2 hoglets that visit the garden every night at 9.30pm. We have started to put food out in a Hedgehog food station for them. Found lots of useful information on your website

Thanks

:)) Thomas, the grumpy hog, who was released into a safe garden, has apparently come through the winter very well in the goat shed!

He comes out into his paddock at night for his food and sometimes lets Jo stroke him, but then he still may have a "hissy fit"! We never knew what had happened to him - some type of brain in jury perhaps, but he has as natural a life as is possible for him, and he loves patrolling his boundary fence to glower and hiss at other hogs!

He must be about 4 years old now so he is doing well.

Delilah has just moved to her outside hutch, since the weather's better - she's taken to it very well, kept the run clean (has stoppped decorating the foodbowl with artistically-arranged poo) and must by now have met some of the local hedgehogs that wander round the garden. She's doing much better on a mix of catfood, moist dogfood, biscuits and dried mealworms. (out of spite, our cat is now demanding the mealworms, eats one but leaves the rest). Yuk. Another week, and if the weather stays mild, The Door Will Be Opened.....

The food will, of course, still miraculously appear, but I'm hoping she'll be earning her keep saving my seedlings from slugs and snails...

Hedgehog rescue has received several small hedgehogs which, in spite of being treated with antibiotics, wormers etc, just have not thrived and not been keen to eat "normal" food. One has since died and the others are desperately slow in gaining weight. They came from a garden where the food offered is peanuts.

Chopped peanuts from a reputable source(and free from aflatoxins which are detrimental to birds and small mammals)are probably ok for adult hogs as an EXTRA to cat or dog food(including cat biscuits)but we have come to the conclusion that they are maybe not so good for babies. has any other carer a comment to make about this or have they had a similar experience?
