Where do hedgehogs live?
Perhaps not surprisingly hedgehogs will live just about anywhere, in towns and cities, countryside and coast. Hedgehogs will live under sheds, in old logs and sometimes if you are lucky they will choose to take up residence in a hedgehog house which has been carefully placed in a secluded overgrown area of your garden. Where ever our prickly friends choose to live, they will construct an amazing nest made of materials the hedgehogs themselves will have gathered.
Hedgehog nest
In the wild nests tend to be constructed of leaves, moss and grass. Nests are usually well hidden in the undergrowth or under sheds and outbuildings. The hedgehogs I have looked after will use all sorts of materials they are provided with to make a cosy bed, shredded paper, straw, hay, kitchen paper and scraps of material have all been found to be popular.
Above is a hedgehog nest box.
Can you spot the hedgehog in this picture?
